The proclamation of the "Weimarer Republik" in the "German National Theatre" took place in this city. Here you can visit Goethes garden and residential house, Schiller residential- house, a Cranach gallery in the city- castle and castles and parks from Belvedere and Tiefurt, the Bauhaus- museum and much more. You can also find the former "Buchenwald" concentration camp here.
Arnstadt - the city of Johann Sebastian Bach - oldest city in Thueringen, mentioned for the first time in 704. In this city you can visit the "Bachkirche" church at which the young Bach worked as an organist. The Bach monument is situated here as well as the lovely baroque doll collection named "Mon Plaisier""
Eisenach -the city of Luther and Bach Martin Luther attended school here and later he translated the Bible at the "Wartburg" castle. It is the birth city of J.S.Bach and also the land countess Elizabeth lived here who later became a Saint. The legendary Singer War took place here in the 12th century.
Gotha - Royal residential city The castle "Friedenstein", the largest early- baroque castle system in Germany is situated here. Therein you can find the oldest reconstructed baroque theatre with original stage technique made of wood named the "Ekhoftheater" theatre.
Jena- University city of Zeiss by the river "Saale". Here you can find the oldest planetarium in the world, the Schiller summer house, the house of Romanticists and a nice botanical garden. You can also visit an optical museum with the largest eyeglass collection in Europe.
Ilmenau -University city of Goethe "The Goethehaeuschen" and the observation tower "Kickelhahn" are nice excursions you can visit. The hunting lodge "Gabelbach" and the authority building are interesting Goethe memorial places.
Meiningen -city of theatre Former residence of the Dukes of Saxon- Meiningen. The delightful theatre in Meiningen occasionally enjoyed European- wide reputation. You can also visit the castles "Elisabethenburg" and "Landsberg".
Schmalkalden - important center of the Reformation It is a very well- reconstructed medieval framework city in the Thueringer Wald. The renaissance castle "Wilhelmsburg" with interesting Iwein- paintings is situated here. You will also find a castle- church with an over 400-year-old playable wood-organ. In Schmalkalden you can visit the Luther house and you can find a university here as well.
Suhl - city of weaponry the handicraft of rifle-making has had its tradition here since 1535; the weapon museum shows the history and development of rifle making up to the present. The monument of the weapon-smith and the "Dianabrunnen" fountain tell likewise of it.
Rudolstadt - city of festivals in the "Saaletal" valley The landmark of this city is the "Heidecksburg" castle with museums and galleries.Schiller and Goethe met here for first time. Every year you can visit an international dance and folk-festival in the old part of the town.
Mühlhausen - city of the towers It has a medieval old part of town with a well-reconstructed city wall. J.S.Bach worked in the "Divi-Blasii-Kirche" church as an organist. Thomas Muentzer preached in the "Marienkirche" church (it is among others a Muentzer memorial place).
Saalfeld - stony historical sight of Thueringen The city at the Saale with an over 1100 years old history has many interesting places, like the castle ruin "Hoher Schwarm", the city wall with the nice gates, a former "Franziskanerkloster" cloister and much more. You can also visit the "Feengrotten" grotto, the most colorful grottos in the world.
Monastery Vessra - "Hennebergisches Museum" museum Former "Prämonstratenser-Chorherrenstift-Vessra" with an imposing medieval layout of a 6-hectare-large museum area with half-timbered houses and historical garden layouts.
Monastery Ruin Paulinzella It is a former monastery system of the "Benediktiner monks" from the 12th century and one of the important Romance building-monuments in Germany. It is part of the UNESCO world culture inherits.
Runneburg, Weißensee It is the sister of the "Wartburg" castle and one of the largest Romance castles in Germany. You can regularly see an 18m-high stone centrifuge from the 12th century on the castle.
